OH the Suspense...

So I'm sure you are all wondering about the answers to the phrasal verb activity and how the story will continue. Well, here you go....

1. Come across: To find something unexpectedly, Sally found the map without looking for it.

2. Make out: to read or see well, Sally couldn't read all of the words or drawings on the map

3. Watch out: a warning to be careful, the warning on the map is saying that there is danger

4. Pick up: to lift something, Sally grabbed the map from the ground and lifted it up.

What happens next?

After dinner, Sally asked to be excused from the dinner table and went to her room. She studied the map and discovered that it was a map to find hidden treasure. She came up with a plan to find the treasure. She called her good friend Oliver to help her. She wanted someone to go with her if it was going to be dangerous. It looked like the treasure was near a building by a very large tree. There was also something else next to the tree that she couldn't make out.  Oliver and Sally thought and thought and thought but couldn't think of a place like this.

The next day at school they asked around but no one knew of a building near a large tree.
After school, Sally asked her parents if they knew of building near a very large tree. Her dad thought about it and told her about an old abandoned church on a hill. Next to the church was a very large tree. This had to be the place and it wasn't very far. Sally called Oliver right away, she wanted to leave that night. To get away with sneaking out, she pretended to be sick and told her parents that she was going to bed. Then she climbed out onto the roof and climbed down a tree.

Phrasal Verb Activity

Phrasal verbs are super popular in English. I don't even realize it when I use one. Below is a paragraph with some common phrasal verbs. From the context of the paragraph, try to figure out the meaning. You can comment on this post with the answers or wait a couple of days for the answers! Good luck!

One afternoon Sally was walking through the woods. Suddenly she came across something strange. She walked over to it and looked at it from every angle. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before. It looked like a map, but it had little drawings all over it. It was also very old and she couldn't make out everything that was written on it. One thing that she could understand though was "Watch Out" written in big bold letters. She was scared but also intrigued. She picked up the map and took it home.

Fun Facts about Denver

Denver is an exciting city with many fun facts.

Did you know that the city is a mile or 1.6 kilometers high. There are a few markers around the city that show the exact spot. One spot is on the capitol building. In the dome, there is a brass cap that marks the exact spot.

Also if you go to a professional baseball game, there is a row of seats that is exactly a mile high. All of the seats are purple.

Speaking of professional sports, Denver is only one of two cities in the U.S. that has 8 professional sports teams:

Broncos (football),

Rockies (baseball),

Nuggets (basketball),

Avalanche (hockey),

Outlaws (lacrosse),

 Rapids (Soccer),

 Crush (arena football),

and the Barbarians (Rugby).

Not only is Denver fascinating now, but it also has an interesting history. Denver was built here because they found gold.

The first permanent structure that was built was a saloon. A saloon is an old western style bar.

Also the city was destroyed two times when it was first built. One time was because of a fire, the other a flood.

Friday Activity 3.29.13

Denver Nuggets vs. Brooklyn Nets

Last Friday we had an amazing time going to a professional basketball game. Even though our seats were in the nose bleed section, we still enjoyed ourselves. We had a great group of students that came. What made the night even better was that the Nuggets won. Actually they didn't just win they crushed the Nets.

Here is some vocabulary from the game:
1. Free throw
2. Defense
3. Foul
4. Three pointer
5. Mascot
There he is, Rocky, the mascot!

Make a comment and define the vocabulary words! Also if you have a story from the game, make a comment.

* nose bleed section: the seats high up in the stadium, you are so high up that you might get a nose bleed
*crushed: won by many points
