Holiday Party / End-of-Session Party 2014!!

On Friday December 4th we had our Holiday Party that coincided with our End-Of-Session Party. We decorated the cafeteria with wreaths, holly and a Christmas tree. The big event of the party was the White Elephant Gift Exchange that took place at the end. If you're not familiar with how a White Elephant Gift Exhange works, you're not alone! Most of our students needed to learn how the tradition worked. Here's how it works:

-If you want to receive a gift during the exchange, you bring a gift to donate on the day of the party.

-Don't put your name on the gift! It's all done anonymously :)

-White Elephant gifts are usually not expensive and can even be a joke. We told students to not spend more than $5.

-Each student who brought a gift got a number and when the Exchange started the person with #1 went to the tree first.

-The first person begins by choosing any present under the tree and opening it for all to see.

-Then the next person goes and here's where it gets fun! This person can either "steal" the first person's gift, OR they can go to the tree and choose a new gift.

-The game continues this way until all gifts are opened. Being the last person to go is the best because you can "steal" anyone's gift who has come before you!

Once students started "stealing" each others' gift the real fun happened!

Last Friday's Basketball Game

Since last week was Thanksgiving, we didn't have a Friday activity. The previous week we got to go to a professional basketball game. We were way up in the nose bleed section, but wherever you sit, a Denver Nuggets game is always fun. It is especially fun when we win, which we did! Enjoy the pictures. Tonight is the Denver Parade of Lights. We are going to be having an international potluck, making gingerbread houses and watching the parade. It should be a great time. Come to the school tonight at 7pm.

Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity

Earlier this month on November 13th, we took some students from the Advanced 1 & 2 Reading and Writing Classes to Habitat for Humanity to volunteer in helping to build a home for a family in need. Habitat has organizations all over the world and their mission is to build affordable housing for families and individuals in need.

Every family that receives a home has to help in the building of their new house, but Habitat also relies on the help of thousands of volunteers to be able to meet their building goals each year.

Check out some of the photos from the day!

Volunteer Days at the Children's Museum in Denver

This week a few of our students had the opportunity to go the the Children's Museum in Denver to volunteer. The museum has a great event every Halloween where they give out candy to a bunch of kids. It's a lot of work to get ready and our students went to help. They filled bags and decorated. Here are pictures from both days, Tuesday and Wednesday. Enjoy!
